Why Prelude to a Kiss?
Prelude is a romantic comedic fantasy that tells the story of two soul mates, Peter and Rita. Their whirlwind romance takes a startling turn at Rita and Peter's wedding when an uninvited guest, an elderly gentleman, congratulates the bride with a kiss. This kiss carries a magic charge that alters the lives of all three characters. Peter faces the question – if we fall in love with what is on the inside, what happens when the packaging changes? If the soul is what we connect with does the body matter? Prelude to a Kiss explores the issue of love in a way that will encourage the audience to examine what the emotion means to them.
Craig Lucas, a gay playwright, wrote Prelude to a Kissat a time when the AIDS epidemic was ravaging the gay community. This touching story was seen as a metaphor for the disease that transformed partners overnight into unrecognizable old men. So many people stayed at the side of their partner through unimaginable obstacles because of their love and devotion.
Note from Artistic Director, Troy Lakey – “I believe this play also speaks to the marriage equality question that is still an ongoing debate. We fall in love and want to spend our lives with what is on the inside. Why are laws put in place to prevent that just because the soul happens to inhabit the body of the same sex as their mate. Life is precarious and short enough, how can people put up road blocks to keep to soul mates apart. I am proud of the decision that Oregon has made regarding domestic partnerships. It gives me hope, like this play does, for a society where all people will be able to grow old with the person they love and not worry about prejudice, discrimination and hate.”
